Twitter launches targeted ads using Cookies


Twitter has begun to employ cookies to get information about where the user is logging in from, as well as on details regarding what other sites they have visited lately. This similar modus operandi has by now been used by other social media Giants like Google, Facebook, Amazon, and Twitter is the last to join the advertising spree. Twitter values at around $10 billion, and has evidently increased its advertising capabilities in face of an anticipated preliminary public offering in 2014.

Twitter will let retailers to attach unidentified versions of their customers email addresses, called hashes, to Twitter's advertising engine so that it can separately target the customer base. Twitter's latest element is expected to elevate advertising rates and revenues for the company.

The mini-blogging site assured in a blog post that its application of cookies is parallel to that of other companies and it didn't give advertisers any extra user information.

Twitter also stated that it will permit users the choice of immobilizing cookies by enabling a "Do Not Track" selection in their browser like Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer. Twitter users can select out of ads by identifying in their account settings. The company also assured that these ads are for its U.S based customers only for now.

In current years there has been an amplified debate on the subject of internet security and users privacy. European Union as well as the U.S. Federal Trade Commission has looked into the point of tracking equipments on Facebook, etc. Last year, European authorities have requested websites to notify visitors that cookies have been placed on their computers.
